Bellingham Slam News Release

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam used solid defense to defeat the Vancouver Volcanoes, 117-94, in a physical International Basketball League game Friday at Whatcom Pavilion.

The result marked the third time this season that the Slam have held an opponent under 100 points, after being unable to accomplish the feat at all in 2008.

After another slow start, the Slam found themselves down 27-22 to start the second quarter. But the Slam used a 17-6 run in the middle stages of the frame to take their first lead, at 35-33, after Jake Linton nailed a three-pointer from the top of the arc. Bellingham ran the lead up to seven late in the first half, before Vancouver rattled off five points in the half's final three seconds to cut the margin to two, at 45-43.

But the Slam once again proved too much for their opponent in the third quarter, outscoring the Volcanoes 32-17 in the period. Bellingham pushed their lead to 21, at 77-56, at the 1:25 mark thanks to a monster tomahawk dunk by Tyler Amaya.

Vancouver was unable to mount any sort of comeback in the fourth quarter, and was only able to get the deficit reduced to 19 on a pair of occasions. Reserve center Kyle Dalvit punctuated the victory with a monster two-handed dunk that earned the night's loudest ovation from the Pavilion crowd.

Jacob Stevenson led five Bellingham players in double figures with 27 points and nine rebounds. Lukas Henne contributed 20 points and nine rebounds, and Amaya finished with a double-double of 15 points and 11 boards.

Vancouver was led by Bryson Mackenzie's 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Jake Carlisle and Brad Lechtenberg added 12 points apiece.

The Slam will look to push their win streak to five as they head south to take on the Snohomish County Explosion on Saturday at the Monroe Sports Arena at 7:15 p.m. The Slam return to Whatcom Pavilion on May 1 as they take on the same Explosion squad in the second of back-to-back games. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
