San Diego Sockers News Release
SOCKERS TAKE ON EXPRESS FOR FIRST TIME
After sweeping a three-game road trip in Phoenix and Tacoma, the San Diego Sockers (9-0 PASL) return home to host the Turlock Express (7-4) at the Del Mar Arena. It is the first-ever meeting between the expansion Express and the Sockers, and the first of two scheduled regular season meetings. The two teams will face each other in Turlock on February 24th.
US OPEN BERTH TO THE WINNER
Saturday's game counts both as a PASL regular season contest and as the Western final of the US Open for Arena Soccer. The winner will advance to face either Detroit or Cincinnati on the road in the US Open Championship, to be played over Presidents' Day Weekend.
ON THE LINE: SOCKERS WIN STREAKS
The Sockers have not lost a match of any kind since dropping an overtime 9-8 decision to the now-defunct California Cougars on December 27th, 2010. Since then, San Diego has won 23 consecutive matches overall, and 17 consecutive regular season matches in the PASL. In addition to their all-time record of 29-0 at the Del Mar Arena, the Sockers have won eleven consecutive road matches, including playoffs and U.S. Open Cup play.
BACK TO BACK AND BELLY TO BELLY
January is the busiest month on the schedule for the Sockers, with eight games in 22 days. San Diego is 4-0 so far through this difficult stretch of schedule, which includes five road games. The Sockers play back-to-back games every weekend in January, including a Sunday 3:30pm contest in Phoenix.
SOCKERS SIGN SUTTON, BOLSTER BACK LINE
The Sockers on Friday announced the signing of veteran defender Antonio Sutton to a contract for the remainder of the season. Sutton, 37, is a two-time all-PASL defender and has been in the professional indoor game since 1997, playing in the CISL, MISL and PASL. Last season Sutton scored fourteen goals as the player/coach of the California Cougars. For the complete story on Sutton's signing visit sdsockers.com.
MVPs POWER SOCKERS OFFENSIVELY
Defending PASL MVP Kraig Chiles is tearing up the league in his third season, leading the PASL in goals (29) and points (43). In addition, former 2008-2009 MVP Brian Farber is tied for 7th in the PASL with 25 points (18 goals, 7 assists) and is just three points from second place.
SUSI 500: THREE TO GO!
Will Saturday be the night for Sockers captain Aaron Susi? The 15-year indoor veteran has 497 points in his career, three away from the 500 point milestone.
INJURY UPDATE
Defenders John Krause (Achilles' tendon) and Dan Antoniuk (groin) are expected to miss Saturday's game for San Diego.
OPPONENT'S PROFILE: Turlock Express
The Express lost 15-9 in Tijuana on Friday night. Turlock's top scorer is former Mexican National Team starter Jorge Quiroz, whose 17 assists lead the PASL. Five Express players have already scored 10 or more goals this season.
