CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced that Kenton Smith has been selected as a nominee for the 2006 InterContinental Hotels Group Ironman Award. Smith, the team's captain, skated in all 72 regular season games during the 2005-2006 season notching 37 points (10g, 27a).
The ICHG Ironman Award is presented annually to a Professional Hockey Players' Association (PHPA) Member playing in the American Hockey League and a Member playing in the ECHL, respectively, who has participated in each of his Club's regular season games and has contributed both offensively and defensively throughout the 2005-2006 regular season.
Nominations are based on individual player performance, with primary consideration placed on games played, points, and plus/minus statistics. A committee comprised of PHPA officials will announce the winners at the PHPA Annual Meeting of Player Representatives in June.
Smith, a defenseman, finished the season with a plus-minus rating of plus two, 133 penalty minutes and was the only Charlotte player to play in all 72 regular season games.
