Smith continues to dominate Cal League in JetHawks win
June 5, 2006 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(Lancaster, CA) - The Arizona Diamondbacks named JetHawks pitcher Greg Smith as the organization's top pitcher for the month of May. Smith then went out and started June in similar fashion, holding Lake Elsinore to just one run in eight innings as the JetHawks beat the Storm 6-1. The win brings the JetHawks to within four games of .500 for the first time since April 18.
The Lancaster offense gave Smith all he needed in the first inning. Wilkin Castillo, in his first game since rejoining the squad from AAA Tucson, walked to start off the frame. Chris Rahl singled, then Carlos Gonzalez brought them both home with a 2-RBI double. Cesar Nicolas singled home Gonzalez and Rusty Ryal doubled home Nicolas to stake Smith to a 4-0 lead.
Smith, who had won each of his previous seven starts and had not allowed a run in either of the last two games in which he's pitched, was dominant once again. After a perfect first three innings, Smith finally allowed a hit, a solo home run to Tim Turner. The Storm got just one more hit against the JetHawks ace, and one walk as Smith won his eighth consecutive game.
Mark Reynolds added a two-run homer in the sixth for the JetHawks. Reynolds leads the California League in that category with 15.
Smith becomes the second JetHawks pitcher in a row to win the Diamondbacks top monthly honor, following Matt Chico's award in April. For May Smith was a perfect 6-0 with an ERA of 1.62. He held the opposition to a meager .188 average, while tallying 34 strikeouts in 39 innings. Scott Hairston, who played for the JetHawks in 2002, won the Diamondbacks award as May's top hitter in the organization.
The JetHawks continue the homestand Tuesday evening against Bakersfield. Greg Smith (2-5) goes to the hill for Lancaster against Broc Coffman (0-0, 1.35). First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. with the Burns Pharmacy JetHawks Pre-Game Show on Magic 1340 AM and www.jethawks.com starting at 6:15 p.m.
The JetHawks are home June 2-7 for a six game homestand including the Endless Summer Kick-Off weekend, complete with fireworks and special giveaways. Tickets and mini plan packages are currently available for the 2006 season and can be ordered by calling the JetHawks at (661) 726-5400 or by logging on to the team website at www.jethawks.com
