Buffalo Bandits News Release
BUFFALO, NY (May 11, 2009) --- The National Lacrosse League announced today that a pair of Buffalo Bandits have won individual awards for the 2009 season. Defender Billy Dee Smith was named the Defensive Player of the Year, while Ken Montour was named as the league's Goaltender of the Year.
Smith appeared in 13 games this season and finished with a career high 12 points (5+7). He led all Bandits defenders in points while recording 47 loose balls and 33 penalty minutes.
"Billy Dee has really matured over the past five seasons," said Bandits head coach and general manager Darris Kilgour. "He has come a long way and it is great to see him recognized for his on-field play."
Montour appeared in 12 games and picked up a career high eight wins this season while leading the NLL with a 9.57 GAA and .813 save percentage - also career highs. He was named the NLL's Defensive Player of the Week on three occasions after victories over Toronto (1/10), Rochester (1/16) and Portland (3/25). The first two came in back-to-back weeks, and he allowed fewer than 10 goals in each game.
"Kenny has paid his dues for a long time," Kilgour said. "He stepped in as our number one guy this year and played at a level above anyone else in the league."
