Smith And Burkholder Earn Wcl Weekly Accolades

The West Coast League Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, as announced by league president Donnie Marbut, are Southern Illinois outfielder Ryan Smith of the Gresham GreyWolves and Dartmouth junior pitcher Chris Burkholder of the Corvallis Knights for the week of August 1-7.

Smith finished the season leading the WCL in on base percentage (.448). For the week, the senior-to-be registered a .656 on base percentage and went 10-for-21 with 10 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs, 9 walks and 4 stolen bases.

The senior-to-be Saluki led the West Coast League in walks with 35, was second in doubles (11), runs (34) and hits (56) and was third in hitting with a .320 batting average.

This past spring, Ryan hit .258 with 3 home runs, six doubles and 4 stolen bases at Southern Illinois.

Burkholder turned in two masterful relief appearances and helped Corvallis go 5-1 for the week. The Knights took a 10-game win streak into the final day of regular season play, which was snapped by the Cowlitz Black Bears in their home finale. Burkholder earned wins in both scoreless relief performances - vs. Gresham and at Cowlitz - going a combined 8 innings while allowing only 3 hits and striking out 8.

For the summer, Burkholder made 12 relief appearances and went 2-2 with a save. The senior-to-be right-hander struck out 33 over 34.1 innings pitched and posted a 1.57 ERA for the regular season.

At Dartmouth, Chris led the Big Green in appearances with 19 and went 2-1 with a 2.97 ERA. He also registered two saves and struck out 37 over 39.1 innings pitched.
