Chicago Slaughter News Release
Hoffman Estates, IL - The Chicago Slaughter (8-0) of the Continental Indoor Football League defeated the Wheeling Wildcats (1-6) 61-38 in front of 2,937 fans at the Sears Centre Arena on Saturday night. The victory did come at a heavy price as WR Donovan Morgan, the top receiver in the CIFL, separated his shoulder early in the first half, and was taken to the hospital.
Slaughter WRs Reggie Gray, Dontrell Jackson and Keith Herron picked up the slack to five total touchdowns in Morgan's absence. Jackson led the team with seven catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns, while Gray added five catches for 60 yards and a score. QB Russ Michna finished his day throwing 21-28 for 249 yards and seven touchdowns.
"When Donovan went out, we all had to step it up and pick up our game," said Gray after the game. "We miss him but we've got a lot of good guys who can play effective football while he's out."
"This is a unique team because they work for each other," Michna said. "I find it interesting that a team such as ours with so little time for practice is able to work so well for each other.
"I personally will miss (Morgan), but we should be able to compensate within the team for his absence, because we've got so many players who can step up."
Defensively, LB DeJuan Alfonzo and DB Jermaine Hampton led the team with five tackles, with Alfonzo also picking up three broken-up passes. DB Brandon Fields added three tackles and an interception, while DL Chris Pisani had two tackles and a sack.
"The defense didn't look great in the first half but we were making adjustments all along," said Alfonzo. "At halftime, we came in and looked at ourselves and our individual mistakes. The main problem was we got out of our lanes early and made it easy for their quarterback to scramble. And that's what we corrected."
No word was given on Morgan's status for the rest of the season after his injury.
The next home game for the Slaughter will be Saturday, May 16, against the Wisconsin Wolfpack at the Sears Centre Arena at 7:05pm. The Slaughter will honor Head Coach Steve McMichael, who was recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
