Slam win third straight to start season, 117-95 over Vancouver

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam broke open a close game in the second quarter as they defeated the Vancouver Volcanoes, 117-95, in International Basketball League action at Whatcom Pavilion on Friday.

It was the second consecutive game in which the Slam held an opponent under 100 points.

Tied at 35 midway through the second quarter, Bellingham used an 11-0 run to build a double-digit lead and never looked back. Holding the Volcanoes to just 16 points in the quarter, they led 52-41 at halftime.

The Slam (3-0) built their lead to 20, at 74-54, halfway through the third quarter on a Lukas Henne three-pointer. Twice in the fourth quarter they maxed out their lead at 27 points, allowing coach Rob Ridnour to empty his bench and give all twelve players minutes.

Morris Anderson led a balanced Slam attack with 23 points, and also added six rebounds and six assists. Derrick Webb and Jacob Stevenson led six others in double figures with 16 points.

Stevenson's tallies in the game ran his career scoring total past the 2,500 mark to 2,509 total points scored in a Slam uniform.

Andre Murray led Vancouver (0-1) with 23 points, but also committed nine turnovers. Lawrence Blackledge finished with 18 points.

The Slam and Volcanoes play a rematch on Saturday night to complete a home-and-home series in Vancouver, with a 7 p.m. tip-off scheduled for Clark College's O'Connell Sports Complex.

The Slam will return home to face the West Coast Hotshots on May 6 in their first ever game in Lynden. The game will tip-off at Lynden High School at 7 p.m.
