Slam Win Streak Snapped in Portland, 121-113

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Bellingham Slam's ten game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Portland Chinooks, 121-113, in International Basketball League action at Eastmoreland Court in Portland.
The Slam started off the game sluggish and found themselves down 10, at 22-12 midway through the first quarter. But Bellingham responded with a 16-5 run to end the quarter to put them up one, at 28-27.
Portland exploited some poor defense by the Slam in the second quarter as they posted 40 points to the Slam's 29, restoring their ten point advantage with a 67-57 halftime lead.
An 11-2 run by the Chinooks to start the second half put the Slam into a deeper hole, trailing by 19 at 80-61, with 6:29 to play in the third quarter. Bellingham was able to stop the bleeding and fought back to trail by nine, at 92-83 on a three-pointer by guard Rico Wilkins late in the quarter.
The Slam looked to be on the verge of staging another big comeback in the fourth quarter, as they trimmed the deficit to six on three separate occasions with under three minutes left. A further comeback was stymied by a pair of botched attempts on critical layups late in the game following defensive stops.
Bellingham (11-2) was led in scoring by guard Jacob Stevenson with 30 points, while guard Derrick Webb had 15. The team struggled on the glass all night, being out-rebounded by a 59-27 margin.
Portland (8-5) was led by forward Kevin Ford, who posted a triple-double with 29 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Slam's next home game is set for Friday, June 21 when they entertain the Vancouver Volcanoes. A 7 p.m. tip-off is set for Whatcom Pavilion.
