BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam let a 12-point third quarter lead slip away, but still were able to defeat the Tacoma Jazz, 133-122, in the Slam's 2008 International Basketball League home opener on Friday at Whatcom Pavilion.

After leading for most of the first half and holding a nine-point halftime lead, at 71-62, the Slam were able to extend their lead to 12 with under four minutes left in the third quarter, before the Jazz went on a 26-11 run that extended into the fourth quarter and gave Tacoma a 105-100 advantage with eight minutes left to play.

But the Slam were able to recover as guards Ryan Diggs and Jared Stevenson combined to score the Slam's next 16 points and retake the lead, at 116-113, with five minutes left. Solid free throw shooting down the stretch by Bellingham helped seal the victory.

Diggs finished with a solid double-double of 32 points and 10 assists. Guard Paul Hafford also had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Tacoma had seven players score in double figures, led by guard Antown Jones' 25. Forward Alex Adediran contributed 22 points and 12 rebounds.

The Slam travel to Vancouver on Saturday, then return home to take on the Snohomish County Explosion on April 4. The game against the Explosion will take place at Bellingham High School instead of the Slam's usual venue of Whatcom Pavilion.
