BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam let most of a 24-point fourth quarter lead slip away, but they still defeated the Central Oregon Hotshots, 126-117, in an International Basketball League divisional game at Whatcom Pavilion on Saturday.
The Slam shot out of the gate to build a 22-8 lead within the first five minutes. Their potent shooting continued through first half as they established a 25-point lead at halftime, at 70-45. Jacob Stevenson and Ryan Diggs each contributed 12 points in the half.
Bellingham continued to maintain control of the game through third quarter, leading by 20, at 95-75.
But Central Oregon began to chip away at the lead in the middle stages of the fourth quarter, using a 25-8 run to trim the Slam's margin all the way down to six points, at 116-110, with 2:41 left. But Bellingham responded to score six of the game's next seven points to re-establish a double-digit lead with under a minute left.
Stevenson and Diggs led the way for the Slam with 25 and 22 points, respectively. Ike Ohanson added 14 points, while Lukas Henne finished with a season-high 13 rebounds.
Jordan Gregg led six Central Oregon players in double figures with 28 points and ten rebounds. Justin Lockhart had 21 points, while Tony Akpan also had a double-double with 18 points and ten boards.
The Slam play their next four games on the road, beginning with a matchup against the Yamhill Highflyers on June 11 in McMinnville, Ore. The Slam won't return home until June 20 when they face the Oregon Waves, with a 5 p.m. tip-off set for Whatcom Pavilion.
