Bellingham Slam News Release
BELLINGHAM, Wash. "" The Bellingham Slam will be looking to make it ten wins in a row on Sunday as they host the East Bay Pit Bulls in an International Basketball League matchup at Whatcom Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
The Slam, which hasn't lost since April 21 in a road game at Vancouver, will welcome a Pit Bulls team from California that will be playing its third game in as many nights following Friday and Saturday contests in Salem and Vancouver. That fact should benefit the well-rested Slam, which last played in Blaine on June 1, a 105-91 victory over the Seattle Flight.
Guard Morris Anderson will be hoping for another strong outing on Sunday after posting his second career triple-double in the win over Seattle, finishing with 18 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds. On the season, he is averaging 13.1 points and a league-leading 6.7 assists per game.
Veteran guard Jacob Stevenson continues to have one of his finest seasons of his eight-year Slam career, leading the team with a 22.2 points per game scoring average. He put up a game-high 27 in the victory against the Flight and also posted a career-best five blocked shots.
Sunday's meeting will kick off an important stretch of games as Bellingham looks to solidify its position atop the IBL's standings. If the Slam is able to hold on to the top spot, they will earn the number one seed at the league's postseason tournament, which begins on July 3 in Portland. The top seed will earn a first round bye and will have the added benefit of facing the survivor of the tournament's only first round game featuring the fourth and fifth ranked teams. The championship semi-finals are slated for July 4 and the title game on July 5. All tournament games are being hosted by the Portland Chinooks at their home venue of Eastmoreland Courts.
Following Sunday's home bout with the Pit Bulls, the Slam will head to Portland on Tuesday to face the aforementioned Chinooks, who currently sit at third in the IBL standings with a 6-5 record. This game will be a big test for the Slam as they attempt to sweep the season series against Portland following their buzzer-beating 106-104 win at home on May 27. Tip-off for Tuesday's game is set for 7 p.m. at Eastmoreland Courts.
