June 7, 2013 - International Basketball League (IBL) News Release

The Brantford Red Sox opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, and fought off a late Kitchener comeback to down the Panthers 3-2 in one of two games played in the Intercounty Baseball League on Friday night.

Kitchener (7-3) scored a lone run in the top of the sixth inning, followed by another in the top of the ninth but fell just short of the comeback, seeing their four game win streak snapped. Brantford (12-2) earned their seventh straight win, which kicked off three games in two and a half days for the Red Sox.

Starter Brandon Huffman had a great outing and earned the win, allowing just four hits and one earned run with five walks and four strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings. Stefan Strecker earned the save, allowing one hit before registering the final out.

Maybe even more impressive was the fact that Brantford managed to win the game while registering just one single hit in the game, a three run homer by Steve Lewis in the fifth inning, scoring Todd Betts and Tyler Patzalek.

The Panthers mustered seven hits in the game, including a single and double from Jeff Pietraszko, and singles from Mike Andrulis, Mike Glinka, Bryon Bell, Mat Taube and Mitch Delaney who also scored. Keith Kandel added a run scored as well to round out the Kitchener offence.

Starter Matt Robertson pitched a complete game eight innings and took the loss, giving up just one hit and three earned runs while walking four and striking out an impressive ten batters faced.

London Majors 2; Toronto Maple Leafs 0

Jordan Townshend pitched a complete game five-hitter as the London Majors blanked the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs 2-0 at Labatt Park, just hours after the Leafs re-acquired slugger Jon Waltenbury from the Barrie Baycats for infielder Jordan Castaldo and veteran pitcher Brett Lawson. Toronto (4-8) has now lost six straight games while London (8-4) took advantage of two Toronto errors to score the lone two runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, handing the Leafs yet another tough loss. Waltenbury was 1-for-4 in his return to the Leafs, who could only muster up five hits against Townshend, who was outstanding all night. Townshend struck out six and walked one and kept the Leafs off-balanced all night. The Majors were finally able to break the scoreless tie with two runs in the eighth, one scoring on an error and the other on an RBI groundout by Paul Young. The Majors had just five hits as well, as Toronto failed to take advantage of some strong pitching of its own. Starter Marek Deska tossed six shutout innings, allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Reliever Adam Garner was charged with the two runs in the eighth on two hits with one strikeout and one walk to take the loss. Will Richards had two hits for the Leafs, who host the Hamilton Cardinals Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.

As mentioned above, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Friday that they have re-acquired outfielder Jon Waltenbury from the Barrie Baycats in exchange for outfielder Jordan Castaldo and right handed pitcher Brett Lawson.

Waltenbury, who was a member of the Leafs during the 2011 season before joining the Barrie Baycats, leads the IBL in home runs with six, and is ranked second in RBI with 16. In 11 games this season he has notched 15 hits and added 11 runs, with a batting average of .357. . Lawson, in this his third season with the Leafs, has a 2-2 record in four starts, including 20 hits, 18 strikeouts and just seven walks in 21 innings pitched with an ERA of 2.57.

Castaldo has appeared in 10 games for the Leafs this year and boasts a .342 average, registering 13 hits in 38 at bats, including two doubles and one home run with five RBI and three stolen bases.
