BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam staked themselves a 20-point halftime lead, then held on to defeat the Edmonton Energy, 114-104 at the Van Vliet Centre on Friday night.
After a defensive first quarter that saw just 43 total points scored, the Slam used an 18-4 run in the second quarter to build a 20-point lead going into halftime, at 57-37.
Bellingham build their lead as high as 27 in the third quarter before Edmonton scored 13 of the period's last 15 points to trim the Slam's lead to 87-72.
The Energy continued to chip away at the Slam's lead throughout the fourth quarter thanks to excellent three-point shooting, getting the margin down to seven points with 41 seconds left. But Edmonton couldn't get a field goal the rest of the way, and Lukas Henne iced the game with a swooping layup with 20 seconds left.
Jacob Stevenson led the Slam in scoring for the tenth straight game with 36 points. Henne finished with 14 points, while Ike Ohanson had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Edmonton was led by Stephen Sirfor the second straight game with 25 points. Rashaun Broadus ended with 22, while Skousan Harker had ten points and 13 boards.
The two teams face-off in the rubber match of their three game series Saturday night. A 7 p.m. tip-off is set for Ross Sheppard High School in Edmonton.
