Bellingham Slam News Release
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam showed few signs of rust as they shook off a 17-day layoff and defeated the Hollywood Fame, 137-103, in an American Basketball Association second round playoff match-up on Saturday night at Whatcom Pavilion. The victory places the Slam among the league's final eight teams for the second straight season.
Mike Parker and Brandon Hartley combined for 67 points and both recorded double-doubles as the Slam defeated the Fame for the first time in three tries this season. Bellingham led from start to finish, but Hollywood was able to stay within striking distance for much of the game. After the Slam built up a 21-point lead after the first quarter, at 37-16, the Fame battled back to trim the deficit to 12, at 54-42, going into halftime.
Hollywood narrowed the gap to ten points 3:52 into the third quarter on a Lionel Davis jumper, but the Slam responded by scoring the next ten points to re-establish a 20-point lead. Hollywood was only able to trim the margin to under 20 points once more for the rest of the game.
Parker, who led all scorers with 34 points, also pulled down a career-best 17 rebounds. Jacob Stevenson narrowly missed a double-double with a 24 point, nine rebound showing. For the second time in three games, every Slam player contributed in the scoring column.
Larry Williams led Hollywood with a double-double of 27 points and 11 assists. Lionel Davis also played a strong game, putting up 25 points and pulling down 17 rebounds. Hollywood completed its season with a 15-13 record.
The Slam will now wait for the result of the Strong Island/Vermont second round game taking place on Sunday to determine what happens next in the playoffs. Fans interested in following that game, with a 1:05 p.m. Pacific time tip-off, at www.audiosportsonline.net/ABA/Teams/Vermont/Broadcast.htm/.
