Bellingham Slam News Release
PORTLAND - The Bellingham Slam will be heading to their second International Basketball League championship game after they defeated the Yamhill Highflyers, 136-105, in the third round of the IBL playoffs at Warner Pacific College on Saturday afternoon.
The outcome of the game did not appear to be in doubt after the middle stages of the first quarter, when the Slam broke open a close game with an 18-4 run. A three-pointer by Derrick Webb at the first quarter buzzer gave the Slam a 39-28 lead and they never trailed by less than 11 points the rest of the way.
Bellingham closed the first half by scoring seven of the second quarter's final eight points and led 72-52 at halftime.
The Slam led by 20 points for the entire in the third quarter, and only three times in the fourth quarter was Yamhill able to trim the deficit to fewer than 30. The big lead allowed coach Rob Ridnour to play his bench for much of the final period.
Ryan Diggs led the Slam with 26 points while Jacob Stevenson finished with 21. Derrick Webb had another strong playoff showing with 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field.
Durrell Nevels was one of the few bright spots for Yamhill, who finished with a monster double-double of 36 points and 17 rebounds, while Nate Bowie chipped in with 24 points.
Bellingham now advances to face either the Vancouver Volcnaoes or the top-ranked Albany Legends, who are competing in the IBL's other semi-final game on Saturday.
Details of the championship game, including the contest's date and location, will be announced next week.
