Tinton Falls, N.J. - Sky Blue FC (6-6-4, 22 points) returns to National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) action on Sunday night, hitting the road to face FC Kansas City (4-8-4, 16 points) at Swope Soccer Village. Kickoff for the match is set for 6:00 p.m. ET, and fans can catch the game live in HD on YouTube 6&idc4c7a8ecbc&ea0e953b4f5) .
"Heading into this weekend, it is very important that we carry the mindset of not allowing last week's performance be a definition of what our season has been so far," said Christy Holly, Sky Blue FC head coach. "We know that our reaction and our character is going to be tested, and we are very confident in our ability to rebound. We know that if we play to our potential and successfully execute our game plan, we will come away with three points on Sunday."
Sky Blue FC looks to get back on the winning side this weekend after falling to the Chicago Red Stars last Saturday evening at Yurcak Field, 3-1. The Red Stars jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in that fixture before a Leah Galton to Sam Kerr stoppage time goal got Sky Blue FC on the board.
Sunday night marks the second meeting of the season between these two clubs, with the result of their first encounter being a 1-1 draw at Yurcak Field in June. In that contest, FC Kansas City struck first in the 27^th minute on an Erika Tymrak to Shea Groom tally, which Sky Blue FC countered with a successful Sarah Killion penalty kick conversion just three minutes later.
Historically, FC Kansas City holds a 4-2-3 advantage over Sky Blue FC in the overall series, but the New Jersey side is 2-1-2 in Kansas City. With a win on Sunday night, Sky Blue FC would claim the season series over FC Kansas City, while the two-time defending NWSL champions would officially be eliminated from postseason contention for the first time ever with a loss or draw.
Despite coming out on the wrong side of 3-1 results in its last two matches, Sky Blue FC is still very much in the hunt for the NWSL postseason. The team currently trails the Western New York Flash by five points for the final playoff spot with four games remaining on its 2016 regular season slate, making a win over FC Kansas City a critical component in keeping their postseason ambitions alive.
Sky Blue FC returns home to New Jersey next Wednesday, Sept. 7^th, welcoming the Orlando Pride to Yurcak Field for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. Tickets for that match are available now 6&id4ed5ca07b8&ea0e953b4f5), and all fans who eat at Quaker Steak & Lube in Edison f6&id6da6464169&ea0e953b4f5) before the game will receive free parking for the match.
