Sky Blue FC News Release
Harrison, NJ - Sky Blue FC has signed forward Ifeoma Onumonu to a one-year contract for the 2021 National Women's Soccer League season.
"I am very excited to sign a new contract to stay with Sky Blue," said Onumonu. "Although we didn't get a true NWSL season in 2020, I felt that the Challenge Cup and Fall Series exposed how much this team is capable of. I like the direction in which this team is headed, and I knew I wanted to be part of the process. I feel tremendous support from my teammates and the coaching staff so I am ready and excited to be part of the challenges as well as success we will have in the future!"
"Ify had a fantastic start to her career with Sky Blue with solid performances in the Challenge Cup and key goals in the Fall Series," said Head Coach Freya Coombe. "She works diligently to develop her game and is very thoughtful in her approach to training. I am excited to see her reach new highs in her career with Sky Blue."
Onumonu joined Sky Blue in January and quickly became a starter during the NWSL Challenge Cup and Fall Series. In her first year with the Club, Onumonu played and started in all ten matches. Across all 2020 competition, she scored three goals and notched an assist while completing over 76% of her passes with 11 of those being key passes.
"Ify progressed tremendously as the year went on and we are looking forward to the opportunity to see her continued growth and contributions to the success of the club next season," said General Manager Alyse LaHue.
Sky Blue FC will begin the 2021 pre-season on February 1, with the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup set to kick-off mid-April. The team is preparing for a 24-match season in 2021, beginning in mid-May.
