Sky Blue FC News Release
Kansas City, Kan. (Saturday, April 11, 2015) - Sky Blue FC will open its sixth professional season on Sunday evening at 4:00 PM EST, beginning its 2015 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) regular season against defending champion FC Kansas City at Sporting Park. The New Jersey side finished the 2014 season riding a franchise record five-match winning streak and will look to spoil FC Kansas City's championship party by breaking that mark on Sunday night.
"We have come along really well," said Jim Gabarra, Sky Blue FC Technical Director & Head Coach. "It has been a little inconsistent due to players coming in and out of camp, but that is a challenge every team is facing. We have a good core, and we have done a good job of getting better every day and every week. We have been consistently improving our play, starting in the back all the way through our final third. We cannot dictate how much time we have in the preseason, but I think that we have been very efficient with the time we have had. We are very optimistic about how this season will go for us."
Despite being without U.S. Women's National Team players Christie Rampone and Kelley O'Hara for the majority of preseason camp (both joined the team this week), as well as missing internationals Caitlin Foord (AUS), Sam Kerr (AUS), Jonelle Filigno (CAN) and Monica Ocampo (MEX) until the end of their participation in the FIFA Women's World Cup, the 2015 Sky Blue FC side has developed a special chemistry that has translated both on and off the field. The team held four top college programs scoreless during an undefeated preseason campaign, and now all of the work and preparation culminates with the opening of the 2015 regular season.
"The season opener is always exciting, and we are fortunate to have our opener at a great venue in Sporting Park," Gabarra continued. "We have the best challenge we could face in playing the defending champion. We are facing a top quality team, and this will be a high level NWSL game. This is why we do all of the work that we have been doing, for this type of opportunity. We are very much looking forward to it."
Fans unable to make it to Sporting Park this Sunday can watch the action live in HD via YouTube.
Sky Blue FC will return to Yurcak Field on Saturday, April 18th, hosting the Houston Dash in its 2015 home opener at 7:00 PM EST. Individual game and season tickets (10 home games) are on sale now, with season ticket packages starting as low as $12 per game.
