Sky Blue FC Meets Washington Spirit in Midweek Road Fixture
May 23, 2018 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
Sky Blue FC News Release
Boyds, Md. - Sky Blue FC (0-5-1, 1 point) will return to National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) action on Wednesday, playing the Washington Spirit (1-5-2, 5 points) at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The match-up gets underway at 7:30 p.m., and fans can watch live via Go90 Sports (USA) and NWSLsoccer.com (INTL).
"It is always difficult to play three times in one week," said Denise Reddy, Sky Blue FC head coach. "Whenever you do not have as much time to prepare, the best thing to focus on is your own team and what you are trying to accomplish. This season, we have been pretty fortunate in terms of our players staying healthy, and that is something we will use to our advantage over this stretch of games."
Tonight's contest is a quick turnaround for both clubs, as each team was last in action this past Saturday. Sky Blue FC hosted the North Carolina Courage at Yurcak Field, where it was edged by the NWSL's lone unbeaten club, 2-1. The Courage jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind goals from Crystal Dunn and Samantha Mewis, but Carli Lloyd make it a 2-1 contest by scoring a stoppage time rocket in the second half. The tally was ultimately voted as the NWSL Goal of the Week.
Washington hosted Portland Thorns FC this past Saturday, falling to the defending league champions by a score of 1-0. Australia international Ellie Carpenter, who is just 18-years-old, hit the game-winner for the Thorns to become the youngest goal-scorer in NWSL history.
Tonight marks the first meeting of the season between Sky Blue FC and the Spirit. Historically, the overall series stands at 7-7-2, with the record in Washington being 3-3-2. Sky Blue FC was swept by the Spirit in 2017, and the team is currently on a four-game skid against its regional foe. Over that span, Washington has outscored Sky Blue FC, 13-6.
This Saturday, Sky Blue FC will host Seattle Reign FC for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Yurcak Field, presented by Coach USA. Tickets for that match are available now online or by calling 888-SBFC-TIX (888-723-2849).
