Sky Blue FC was unable to defeat second place FC Kansas City on Sunday night despite a late surge. The match ended in a 2-1 victory for Kansas City, securing the squad's season-long unbeaten streak at home.
FC Kansas City applied offensive pressure early on with multiple dangerous attempts in the first half. SBFC's defense was able to hold off Kansas City's front line until the 34th minute, when FCKC forward Amy Rodriguez scored her 11th goal of the season. Midfielder Lauren Holiday carried the ball into the penalty area and found Rodriguez wide open on the left side of the net for an easy finish.
Holiday added a goal to her assist in the second half. FCKC widened the gap to a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute when forward Frances Silva slipped a pass through the New Jersey club's defense for Holiday to finish.
Sky Blue FC found its way onto the scoreboard in the last few minutes of the match when forward Nadia Nadim intercepted a pass and took a shot on goal in the 87th minute. The NJ squad continued to pressure the FCKC defense throughout stoppage time, but was unable to find the equalizer.
The Western New York Flash experienced a tough loss at home on Friday against the last place Boston Breakers. The 4-2 loss put the Flash four points out of playoff position and added a load of pressure on the squad as it enters the last few weeks of the season.
Western New York got on the scoreboard early with a goal in the 15th minute. Forward Jasmyne Spencer headed the ball into the back of the net from a cross by midfielder Carli Lloyd. Boston responded in the 27th minute when midfielder Kristie Mewis found midfielder Lianne Sanderson in the penalty box.
The Breakers scored two more times in the first half. Midfielder Heather O'Reilly converted a penalty kick in the 30th minute after forward Jazmine Reeves was fouled in the box. Nine minutes later, Reeves headed the ball into the net from an O'Reilly throw in to put Boston up 3-1.
The Flash pressured the Breakers' back line multiple times throughout the second half, but was only able to find one more goal. Lloyd earned her seventh goal of the season in the 54th minute when she placed the ball in the top right corner past Boston goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.
The Boston squad scored its fourth and final goal in the 86th minute when O'Reilly once again found the back of the net. The win was Boston's fourth of the season.
Sky Blue FC and the Western New York Flash have not met each other since their May 11 match in Rochester. Western NY defeated SBFC 2-0 in their only matchup of this season so far. Both squads were missing key players due to national team commitments during the AFC Asian Cup in Vietnam. Forward Abby Wambach scored both of WNYF's goals.
SBFC has partnered with NJ Youth Soccer for the match to present "NJ Youth Soccer Night," which will include contests, prizes, and special promotions for NJYS participants.
