Sky Blue FC News Release
Howell, N.J. - Sky Blue FC finished its 2019 preseason with a 2-0 victory over fellow New Jerseyans Rutgers University. Jen Hoy and Paige Monaghan scored to lift Sky Blue over the Scarlet Knights.
"We defend as a unit, from forwards back to goalkeepers, so when we get a shutout it's not just the backline and the goalkeepers, it's all of us because we work as one unit at all times, no matter where the ball is," Head Coach Denise Reddy said. "We put a lot of time into establishing a good comradery and our defensive organization and I think it showed tonight."
In the ninth minute of the match, Raquel Rodriguez flicked the ball Jen Hoy, who juked several defenders before sending the ball deep into the back of net to give Sky Blue the lead.
Reddy's defense held Rutgers to limited shots throughout the remainder of the first half and well into the second half, with Sheridan making several crucial saves to preserve the scoreline.
After a number of close shots, Paige Monaghan broke through the Scarlet Knight's defense to double Sky Blue's lead 2-0.
The club's first official league match will be played on April 13 against the Washington Spirit at Maryland SoccerPlex and the home opener will take place on Saturday, April 20, at 6 p.m. ET against the Houston Dash at Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers.
