Sky Blue FC News Release
Piscataway, NJ - Sky Blue FC (4-12-4, 16 points) fell 2-1 to the North Carolina Courage at Yurcak Field. Carli Lloyd scored the lone goal from the penalty spot in the 14th minute.
North Carolina got on the board early with an own goal in the 1st minute. A cross sent in by the Courage deflected off the foot of Erica Skroski and landed in the back of the Sky Blue goal.
Despite the early goal, Sky Blue continued to push forward and keep high pressure on the Courage backline. In the 6thminute, Jen Hoy took on two courage defenders and ripped a shot on goal forcing goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe to make the save. Hoy attempted to put the rebound away but just sent it over the crossbar.
Carli Lloyd knotted the game up at 1-1 in the 14thminute after converting a penalty kick. The initial penalty call came as Courage defender Abby Dahlkemper took down Paige Monaghan in the box.
Lloyd came close to putting Sky Blue on top in the 20th minute but her shot pinged off the crossbar. Moments later in the 25th minute, Sarah Killion sent a ball forward to Monaghan, who collected and beat Courage defender McCall Zerboni, and ripped a low shot past Labbe but just inches wide of the right post.
In the 57th minute, Courage forward Crystal Dunn found the back of the net to put North Carolina up 2-1. Dunn played the ball wide to Kristen Hamilton, who fought past two defenders and cut the ball back to Dunn, who was unmarked in the box. Dunn quickly sent her shot to the low left corner of the goal past the diving Kailen Sheridan.
Courage had one last opportunity on goal in the 90th minute as McDonald went one-on-one with Sheridan, but was denied at point-blank range.
Raquel Rodriguez had the final attempt for Sky Blue to even the score up as a poor clearance made its way to her feet in stoppage time. Zerboni's attempted clearance found Rodriguez a few yards away from the 18-yard box, who sent a rocket towards the upper right-hand corner but just missed the equalizer by inches.
