Sky Blue FC Acquires Three NWSL Draft First-Round Picks and International Slots
Harrison, NJ - Sky Blue FC has acquired two 2021 NWSL Draft first-round picks, a conditional first-round pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft, and international slots for 2021 and 2022 in a trade with the Chicago Red Stars. As part of the trade, Chicago will receive forward Mallory Pugh and midfielder Sarah Woldmoe.
"I feel so incredibly blessed to have spent the past six years at Sky Blue," said Woldmoe. "I want to say thank you to the owners and the entire organization for the opportunity to play. I grew up with Sky Blue. I learned a lot about the game but also quite a lot off the pitch and I will cherish all of the memories that I have made here. To the fans - thank you for the continuous support over the years. To my teammates - you all mean more to me than the game itself. I will miss everyone and I look forward to following the growth of this Club! Thank you, Sky Blue!"
Woldmoe, 28, was drafted out of UCLA by Sky Blue with the second overall pick in the 2015 NWSL Draft. She has been the Sky Blue captain since 2018 and reached her 100th cap with the Club in 2019. Woldmoe played in a total of 106 matches for the Club and scored 11 goals.
"I want to thank Sarah for being a fantastic player and captain for Sky Blue," said Head Coach Freya Coombe. "Sarah is a top-notch professional and I truly wish her all the best in her move to Chicago and glad she can be back with her family."
The Fort Wayne, IN native, holds several Sky Blue all-time records including matches played (106), matches started (101), minutes played (9,164), and penalty kick goals (8). She also holds Sky Blue single-season records for penalty kick goals (4), matches started and played (24), and minutes played (2,160) after completing an ironwoman season in 2019.
"Sarah has been an incredibly important part of Sky Blue for many years," said General Manager Alyse LaHue. "While it is terribly bittersweet that we must see her off, it was important for us to get her to her preferred location to be reunited with her husband and close to family. She has left her mark here at Sky Blue and we wish her nothing but utmost success and joy both on and off the pitch."
Pugh, 22, joined Sky Blue in January 2020 but missed all but one match of the year with an injury. The Littleton, CO native first made her NWSL debut in 2017 with the Washington Spirit. She made her lone Sky Blue appearance in a 2-1 victory against the Washington Spirit in the NWSL Fall Series opener on September 5 and recorded an assist on the match-winning goal.
"Mal's time with Sky Blue was unfortunately restricted by injury and the reduced season, but we want to wish her all the best in her future career," said Coombe.
"On behalf of Sky Blue, I echo Coach Coombe's sentiments in wishing Mal a swift return to full form and nothing but success in Chicago and wherever her career may take her," stated LaHue. "We'll look forward to seeing her on the pitch again next season."
Sky Blue FC now holds the 3rd, 4th, and 8th overall picks in the first round of the 2021 NWSL Draft, along with the 13th, 23rd, 33rd, and 40th overall picks. The NWSL Draft is January 13, 2021, at 7 p.m. ET and will stream live on Twitch. Preseason will begin on February 1, with the NWSL Challenge Cup kicking-off in mid-April.
