MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Jan. 14, 2015) - With the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) College Draft on tap for this Friday morning in Philadelphia, Sky Blue FC has made a move to acquire the third round (No. 25 overall) and fourth round (No. 34 overall) picks from Portland Thorns FC. In exchange for the selections, the Thorns have acquired the rights to Portland native Kendall Johnson.
"We want to thank Kendall for her contributions over the past two years," Sky Blue FC technical director and head coach Jim Gabarra remarked. "She came in here and earned a starting spot, giving us valuable minutes at the left back position. We would like to wish her all the best with her hometown team."
Johnson, 23, was the second round (No. 12 overall) selection of Sky Blue FC in the 2013 NWSL College Draft, starting all 22 matches for the New Jersey side and contributing two assists on the offensive end. During the 2014 NWSL season, Johnson made 12 starts over 15 appearances.
With the addition of the draft picks involved in this trade, Sky Blue FC will now make six total selections in Friday's draft. Its first pick will come second overall, next going on the clock at 10th overall as the first selection of the second round. The team will then make two picks in both the third round (No. 22 overall, No. 25 overall) and fourth round (No. 28 overall, No. 34 overall).
The 2015 NWSL College Draft will begin on Friday at 9:30 a.m. EST in Room 113B-C at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and it is open to the public and media.
