Lancaster JetHawks News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - The JetHawks loaded the bases with no outs in the third but managed just one run and never threatened again in an 8-1 loss to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Monday night at LoanMart Field.
Down 1-0, Lancaster (32-31) loaded the bases with two walks and a Johnny Sewald single to begin the third inning against Quakes starter Josh Sborz (6-3). Leadoff hitter Bobby Boyd drew a walk to tie the game but Sborz found his way out of the jam. Drew Ferguson and Garrett Stubbs each struck out and Brooks Marlow flew out to deep left field to end the inning.
Sborz settled in to retire the next seven batters, striking out six of the seven.
Dean Deetz (3-2) couldn't keep the game tied for long. In the bottom of the third inning Erick Mejia tripled and scored on a Tim Locastro sacrifice-fly. Dodgers' rehabbing outfielder Yasiel Puig lined a home run over the right field fence to make it a 3-1 score.
Julian Leon added a two-run home run in the fifth inning and Deetz was unable to finish the frame. The right-hander allowed five runs (four earned) over 3.2 innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Rogelio Armenteros entered the game to face Puig, a fellow native of Cuba. Armenteros walked the big leaguer on four pitches and would go on to walk a season-high six batters over two innings of work. He allowed three unearned runs.
Kevin Comer did not allow an earned run over the final 2.1 innings in his relief appearance. Lancaster pitchers walked a season-high 10 batters in the contest.
With the loss, the JetHawks were officially eliminated from contention in the first half South Division race. Rancho Cucamonga (40-24) has won six in a row and remained a game behind first-place High Desert.
Lancaster has now lost a season-high five in a row and is being outscored 37-6 over the first five games of the current seven-game road trip. They entered the trip having won a season-high seven games in a row.
The series continues on Tuesday as the JetHawks send Josh James (4-2) to the mound against Andrew Sopko (7-0) at LoanMart Field. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
