Chicago Bandits News Release
LEXINGTON, NC -- The Chicago Bandits hit six home runs and outscored the NPF Diamonds 20-2 en route to a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday evening. Alexis Jager collected four RBI on the evening in the Bandits' 7-1 and 13-1 victories.
Chicago starters Monica Abbott and Nikki Nemitz were virtually unhittable, as the pair combined to allow one run on five hits through 12 innings over the two games.
In game one, the Bandits jumped on the board early with a three-spot in the opening frame. NPF starter Morgan Melloh issued a pair of walks before catcher Shannon Doepking ripped a two-out double to plate both runners. Right fielder Alexis Jager made it a 3-0 lead for the Bandits with an RBI-single.
Both teams settled in for the next three innings, as Melloh and Abbott combined to give up just one hit during the span.
The Diamonds threatened in the bottom of the fourth when third baseman Loryn Johnson reached on an error and advanced to third on first baseman Rhiannon Kliesing's base-knock, but Abbott quickly quashed the threat with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
Kliesing took over in the circle for Melloh in the fifth and the Bandits struck again, tacking on four more runs to make it 7-0. Shortstop Tammy Williams, who walked and scored in the first, singled to lead off the inning and second baseman Danielle Zymkowitz followed with her second home run of the season to give Chicago a five-run cushion. It was the first in a string of long balls for the Bandits, as first baseman Alisa Goler and left fielder Megan Wiggins made it back-to-back-to-back roundtrippers for the Bandits, each with a solo shot.
Johnson drove in the lone run for the Diamonds with an RBI-single in the seventh as Danielle Bourgeois closed out the final two innings for Chicago.
The offensive momentum carried into game two for the Bandits. Wiggins got things rolling with a two-run homer in the first and Jager followed suit two batters later with a two-run blast of her own.
The Bandits built their lead to six runs in the third thanks to a two-RBI single from third baseman Amber Patton, then exploded for five more runs in the fifth. Jager drove in her third run of the game with a two-bagger and later scored on shortstop Christine Knauer's base-hit. Williams put the game out of reach with a three-run bomb, marking the sixth home run of the evening for the Bandits.
Chicago added two more runs in the sixth before the Diamonds finally got on the board in the bottom half of the frame, but it was the only run NPF would muster as the Bandits claimed the 13-1 victory.
The Bandits and Diamonds finish out the four games series tomorrow at 7:00 at North Davidson High School in Lexington, NC.
