SIFL The Tuesday After: Lee Likes Less
Published on June 16, 2009 under Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) News Release
Fans may dig a game where the teams combine to score 73 points in a half, but give Louisiana Swashbuckler coach Darnell Lee slightly more sedate offerings like the second half on Monday's 60-43 victory over the Austin Turfcats any day.
Louisiana held the Turfcats to seven points in 30 minutes as the Swashbucklers all but established home field advantage for the inaugural SIFL post-season. The Bucs are now a combined 5-1 against the Turfcats and Acadiana Mudbugs. Austin also lost to the Mudbugs on opening night.
``We were playing great defense against a great team,'' Lee said. ``As a coach, you can't ask for anything more."
The first half dramatics, which included three returns for touchdowns, came out of necessity for Louisiana, which saw itself down 10-0 and 30-14 early.
``We came out flat and needed to rally,'' Lee said. ``Of all games to come out flat, it's against the team that beat us,'' Lee said. ``I don't know if it's due to a Monday and guys getting off work, but we weren't ready to play.''
Had the game continued the first half scoring pace, the combined scoring would have been the highest in all four indoor leagues this season. But the Bucs' defense turned the game into simply the SIFL's second highest scoring game behind the combined 109 in the first Bucs-Turfcats meeting.
CATS-BUCS NOTES: Austin was held scoreless in the fourth quarter, marking the first time the Turfcats hadn't scored in a period since the opening quarter of the first meeting between the teams ... Turfcats coach Chris Duliban is the last coach to beat the Swashbucklers in Lake Charles; he did it when his CenTex Barracudas beat Louisiana 58-52 on June 24, 2006 (Thank you, Ken Adams) ... Kickers Darren Brown and Tommy Hebert combined for seven field goals in the Lake Charles Civic Center that has earned its place as the most kicker-friendly arena in the league. Eighteen of the 35 field goals made have been in Lake Charles.
LEWIS LEADS: It's become a routine announcement each that Acadiana Mudbugs DB Kimmee Lewis registered yet another interception. The one he had Saturday helped the Mudbugs hold off a late Houma rally in the final seconds. He now has ten picks in seven games.
Here's the stat that is rarely seen in indoor football: Lewis and the Mudbugs held their opponent with a touchdown pass ... for the second time this season. Houma made up for the lack of passing with the surging play of RB Michael Burks, who rushed for three touchdowns and has scored five times in the past two games.
