Published on April 1, 2005 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Friday, April 1, 2005) - Major League Soccer today announced that Sierra Mist, the official soft drink of MLS, will be the uniform sponsor of defending MLS Cup Champion D.C. United during the 2005 season. The new patches will adorn the uniforms of the League's most decorated team beginning Saturday, April 2, when United kicks off the League's 10th season against expansion club CD Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California, live on ABC Sports (3:00 p.m. ET).
As the team's official uniform sponsor, Sierra Mist will place highly visible logo patches on the club's jersey backs, sleeves, and shorts. The patches will be seen on the United uniforms as the team competes in MLS's 10th season, the CONCACAF Champions Cup, and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this year.
The agreement further solidifies the relationship between Sierra Mist and D.C. United rising star Freddy Adu, who signed an endorsement deal with the soft drink brand prior to the 2004 MLS season. Adu has been a major component of Sierra Mist's advertising campaigns during the past year, including a television spot where the young prodigy competed against soccer legend Pelé for the last bottle of Sierra Mist. During the 2005 MLS season, Adu and Major League Soccer will be featured on a series of special limited-edition 14-ounce Sierra Mist cans available in Wal-Mart stores nationwide.
"We are pleased to join forces with the most successful team in MLS history," said John Galloway, VP of sports and media, Pepsi-Cola North America. "This affiliation furthers our commitment to the sport of soccer and is a tremendous platform to showcase our partnership with Freddy Adu."
One of Major League Soccer's most visible corporate partners, Sierra Mist is the title sponsor of the 2005 MLS All-Star Game(tm); the Sierra Mist Dribble, Pass & Score(tm) youth skills competition; and the popular Sierra Mist Goal of the Week/Goal of the Year feature on MLSnet.com and on MLS telecasts.
Major League Soccer's 10th Season kicks off on Saturday, April 2, 2005 with a full slate of games. First Kick 2005 is highlighted by the highly anticipated inaugural MLS match for Club Deportivo Chivas USA, as Mexican legend Ramon Ramirez and his Chivas teammates host Adu and MLS Cup champion D.C. United at The Home Depot Center in a match televised live on ABC Sports (3:00 p.m. ET).
In other matches on April 2: Clint Mathis and Eddie Pope lead Real Salt Lake against their former club, the MetroStars, at Giants Stadium (7:00 p.m. ET); the Los Angeles Galaxy travel to face the Supporters Shield winners, the Columbus Crew (7:30 p.m. ET on HDNet); the Western Conference Champion Kansas City Wizards and forward Josh Wolff host the Colorado Rapids (8:00 p.m. ET); the Chicago Fire battle Eddie Johnson and FC Dallas in the first installment of the Brimstone Cup (8:30 p.m. ET); and Taylor Twellman and the New England Revolution take on Brian Ching and the San Jose Earthquakes at Spartan Stadium to close out opening day (10:00 p.m. ET).
