Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Salt Lake City, UT - Phil Avlas, Tim Raines, Jr. and Trent Oeltjen all had RBI singles in the Sidewinders three run eighth inning as Tucson rallied to defeat Salt Lake 5-3 on Sunday afternoon and sweep the three game series. It is the first time Tucson has swept a series since August of 2006.
Trailing 3-2 entering the eighth, the Sidewinders strung together five consecutive one out singles to claim the lead. Wilkin Castillo and Frank Curreri had back to back base hits to put runners at first and second and a balk by Bees pitcher Jeff Kennard moved them to second and third. Avlas lined a single to left to tie the game at three and Raines' base hit to right put Tucson ahead 4-3. Oeltjen's line drive single to left gave the Sidewinders an insurance run making it 5-3.
Kennard was charged with the loss allowing three runs in just a third of an inning.
Evan MacLane earned the win by scattering six hits and allowing three runs in seven innings. MacLane (5-6) gave up a solo home run to Adam Pavkovich in the second and a two run shot to Matt Brown in the third but did not allow another run.
Juan Gutierrez pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts in his first action since June 7th. Reid Mahon allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth but got Gary Patchett to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. Mahon notched his second save with the Sidewinders and his 20th in as many chances this season.
The Sidewinders open a four game series with the Las Vegas 51's on Monday night at Cashman Field. Right-hander Matt Torra (1-1, 3.86) starts for Tucson against right-hander Heath Totten (1-1, 6.48) for Las Vegas. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:55.
