Sidewinders Fall to Beavers in 10, 9-7

Tucson, AZ - The Sidewinders dropped a tough game to the Portland Beavers by a final of 9-7 on Wednesday. After allowing a five run third and trailing 7-1, Tucson pushed six across the plate in the sixth to tie the game up before conceding two runs in the tenth.

Portland started the game off with a double and a single to open up the scoring. Then with runners on the corners and one out, SS Royce Huffman hit a double play ball that SS Matt Erickson dropped in the transfer, enabling the second Portland run of the inning to come in from third and give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

Portland loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third. Huffman then smashed a three-run double off the wall in left to put Portland up 5-0. 3B Jon Schemmel then lined a double off the wall to bring in another run. RHP DJ Carrasco came in to pitch after one out in the inning. His first pitch was a run scoring single off the bat of 2B Keoni Ruth.

There was a 32 minute delay due to a power outage in the bottom of the third inning. Later in the inning, LF Jarred Ball scored on an Erickson single up the middle to put the score at 7-1.

Tucson tied the game up with a six run sixth. The Sidewinders loaded the bases with nobody out after three straight singles. 2B Ronnie Merrill Jr. slapped a single to bring in one run. Ball then walked to plate another runner. PH Carlos Quentin hit a sac fly to right to bring the score to 7-4. Thompson then singled in another run and was followed by a two-run double off the bat of Erickson to knot the came up at 7.

The tie was broken up in the tenth. The Beavers loaded the bases with nobody out and a sac fly by Schemmel brought in a run. Portland reloaded the bases after an intentional walk and RHP Emilio Fruto walked in a run to give Portland a 9-7 lead.
