Showtime Basketball Comes to ABA
October 3, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it has added Clayton, CA for the upcoming season that begins in December. "We are very pleased to have Earl Williams and his great staff as part of the ABA," stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO. "Clayton is a beautiful city located right outside of Concord and next to Walnut Creek and fits beautifully into our Northern California Division. While the announcement is a late one, Earl and his organization have been working for many months putting together all of the pieces and we have no doubt that this will be a terrific addition to the league."
"SHOWTIME basketball is excited about our new relationship with the ABA," stated Williams. "It solidifies our team's progress from a bunch of guys playing rec ball together to travel ball and now a certified team in the 2009-2010 season. Since the beginning as a semi-pro team a few years ago, the SHOWTIME basketball team has made quite an impact on the pro-am circuit. We played last season as an ABA travel team. It pretty much just happened. My daughter really pushed me to do it and it has taken on a life of its own.
Williams started the team simply as a way to allow high level players a way to continue playing. His daughter Monica, a sophomore at Carondelet High, came up with the team's name because of her father's affinity for the old Lakers' teams. The vision now is to be competitive enough so scouts for the NBA Oakland Warriors will visit and check out the players and of course, win the ABA Championship. "We are very happy about our progress and now we are reaching out to our community for more fans and creating new business relationships," added Williams. Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
