PREVIEW: The Shorebirds open the 2013 season with a four game series against the Hagerstown Suns. The April 4 home start is the earliest since the 2008 season when the Shorebirds played their first game on April 3 against Hagerstown at Perdue Stadium.
18TH SEASON: The 2013 season marks the 18th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 17th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.
BRAND NEW STAFF: After three seasons as manager of the Shorebirds, Ryan Minor was promoted to the same role in Frederick. Luis Pujols will begin his first season as manager. Justin Lord will serve as the pitching coach while Jon Mathews will be the hitting coach. The Shorebirds will have a fourth coach this season, Shawn Roof. All four are also new to the Orioles organization.
TOP PROSPECTS: The Opening Day roster features eight players that rank amongst the top 31
prospects in the Orioles farm system according to Baseball America. The eight are Branden Kline (9th), Adrian Marin (10th), Christian Walker (12th), Torsten Boss (15th), Josh Hader (19th), Parker Bridwell (23rd), Gregory Lorenzo (29th) and Roderick Bernadina (31st).
FAMILIAR FACES: The Shorebirds 2013 Opening Day roster features 14 players that played in at least one game for the Shorebirds in past years. The list includes: Parker Bridwell, Miguel Chalas, Mychal Givens, Juan Guzman, Matt Hobgood, Williams Louico, Jose Nivar, Matt Taylor, Wynston Sawyer, Anthony Caronia, Adrian Marin, Roderick Bernadina and Gregory Lorenzo.
OPENING DAY STARTER: The Orioles have named Parker Bridwell the opening day starter for the Shorebirds on Thursday, April 4 against Hagerstown. Bridwell went 5-9 with a 5.98 ERA last season in 22 starts for the Shorebirds.
