Shockwave's Successful First Season Ends
July 24, 2007 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
San Diego Shockwave News Release
The Shockwave, who finished their inaugural regular season 10 -1, fully expected begin their quest for an NIFL championship. Instead, they're packing their bags and heading home. "While we're extremely disappointed, we're deeply appreciative for the unwavering support of our fans and sponsors - we will be back," vowed General Manager, Jeff Sprowls.
As champs of the Pacific West Division and the Pacific Conference of the NIFL, the Shockwave were fully expecting a run at the championship. "We wanted this championship for not only our fans, sponsors, players, but for our staff too," commented Sprowls. "We've all worked too hard this year for this to happen. But unfortunately, it's out of our control. The dysfunctional nature of the NIFL has put us all in this position."
However, Sprowls vows that the team will return, continuing to play the high-energy style of Shockwave football next season at Cox Arena, albeit in a different league. The Shockwave are examining the likes of af2 (the league the former San Diego Riptide played in), AIFA and UIF.
"We owe it to our dedicated fans, sponsors, players and staff," said Sprowls, who purchased expansion rights to San Diego last September. "We've had an extremely successful season and are developing a good fan base. We only lost one game, have a great product on and off the field and people like indoor football. We're going to keep playing."
The aformentioned leagues are calling, hoping to entice the Shockwave and their potent offense and stifling defense to join for the 2008 season.
