
Shock's Ruth Riley visits Kenya for World AIDS Day

Auburn Hills, MI - Detroit Shock center and two-time WNBA Champion Ruth Riley is making a trip to Nairobi, Kenya to take part in the Healthy Women Healthy Economies East Africa Trip as part of the Global Business Coalition (GBC) for HIV/AIDS. The event runs from November 28 through December 2 and centers around World AIDS Day on December 1.
The NBA and WNBA, along with its players, teams and Legends will participate in various events to commemorate World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS, which results in 8,500 deaths and 14,000 new infections daily.
Riley has joined Ambassador Richard Holbrooke and the GBC on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for a trip to Kenya to highlight the increasing burden of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. Riley and the group will visit local villages, as well as participate in a public HIV/AIDS testing event to raise awareness of the disease and to stress the importance of testing.
The Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS is the pre-eminent organization leading the business fight against HIV/AIDS. The rapidly expanding alliance of over 200 international companies is dedicated to combating the AIDS epidemic through the business sector's unique skills and expertise. GBC is headquartered in New York and has regional offices in Beijing, Paris, Geneva and Johannesburg.
The NBA and its players have long supported the cause of HIV/AIDS education and awareness through Public Service Announcements, leadership in the GBC on HIV/AIDS, grassroots events around the world including Basketball without Borders, and through partnerships with leading AIDS organizations. Most recently, the NBA partnered with UNICEF and UNAIDS to produce a global PSA campaign for the Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS global outreach campaign.
