Shock Acquires Jacqueline Batteast in Draft-Day Trade

Auburn Hills, MI - Detroit Shock Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Bill Laimbeer announced today that the Shock acquired Jacqueline Batteast from the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for Ambrosia Anderson, whom the Shock selected this afternoon with the 17th overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft.
"Not only did Jacqueline go to the best school in the country in Notre Dame," said Laimbeer, "but she is a tremendously skilled player who, after fighting some injuries last season, will fit right in with the rest of our roster. We actually had her on our draft board last season, but Minnesota selected her in the second round before we had the opportunity to."
The Shock also selected Zane Teilane (zah-NAY tee-LAH-nay), a 6-7 center from Western Illinois, with the 35th overall pick in the draft.
"We actually thought that Zane would go earlier in the draft," explained Laimbeer, "and despite the fact that our roster is a little thin on guards at the moment, we couldn't pass up a 6-7 center who really impressed us with her work ethic throughout the college season and WNBA Pre-Draft Camp. We'll address our guard depth in a variety of ways leading up to training camp."

Batteast, a 6-2 forward, was originally drafted by the Lynx in the second round, No. 17 overall, in the 2005 WNBA Draft. As a rookie last year, she played in eight games for Minnesota spending 41 days on the Injured List with a hyper-extended left knee that she originally injured on May 17, 2005.
As a collegian, Batteast led Notre Dame to a 27-6 mark as a senior and was named the Big East Player of the Year. She finished her career with the Fighting Irish ranked fourth in career points and rebounds, third in career blocked shots and second in career double-doubles.
Teilane, originally from Riga, Latvia, was the Mid-Continent Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year as a junior and senior, and a three-time member of the All-Mid Continent First Team (2004, 2005, 2006). She averaged 14.6 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while connecting on 52.9 percent of her field goals and 75.2 percent of her free throw attempts in her years at Western Illinois.

Detroit opens the 2006 WNBA season at Indiana on May 20 at 7 p.m. The Shock home opener is scheduled for May 24 vs. the Minnesota Lynx at 7:30 p.m.
