Doug Shedden, who guided the Memphis RiverKings to back-to-back Central Hockey League (CHL) Ray Miron President's Cup Championships in 2001-02 and 2002-03, has been named the new head coach of the American Hockey League's St. John's Maple Leafs.
During Shedden's five plus seasons in the CHL (Wichita/1992-95 and Memphis/2000-03) his team's captured four CHL Championships with an overall regular season coaching record of 231-105-26 (.674 winning percentage) and a 42-17 playoff mark (.712 winning percentage). Following the 1993-94 season he was named CHL Coach-of-the-Year in leading the Wichita Thunder to the first of their two consecutive CHL Championships.
"I am extremely excited about this new challenge in my life," Shedden said Monday. "My time in the CHL was a fantastic experience and has fully prepared me for my next coaching challenge. I look forward to continuing my working relationship with the RiverKings and CHL as I move into the next phase of my career."
For the past two seasons, the RiverKings have been affiliated with both the Toronto and St. John's Maple Leafs. This relationship will continue in 2003-04. During the past two seasons, eight players including 2001-02 CHL Rookie-of-the-Year, Sebastien Centomo have been assigned or recalled by the Maple Leafs organization.
CHL President Brad Treliving commented on Shedden's advancement, "With our continued commitment towards coaching and player development, we are extremely pleased to see Doug rewarded with this opportunity," said Treliving. He has earned this promotion through his hard work and dedication and we know that his on-ice success will continue with the St. John's Maple Leafs."
The 17-team Central Hockey League is the only minor professional hockey league to show an average increase in fan attendance over the past two seasons. The league's two newest expansion teams, the Colorado Eagles and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees join the CHL as the 2003-2004 regular season opens in mid-October.
