Shaw CFL Top Performers Named for Week 15

September 24, 2019 - Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

TORONTO - Vernon Adams Jr., Jake Wieneke and Andrew Harris were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 15 of the CFL's 2019 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Ford of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

QB | VERNON ADAMS JR. | MONTREAL ALOUETTES

Vernon Adams Jr. led the way as Montreal overcame a 24-point deficit en route to a 38-37 victory - the largest comeback in team history. Adams completed 27-of-43 passes (62.8%) while establishing new career-highs in passing yards (488) and touchdown passes (four). The former Oregon Duck added 38 yards on the ground and a rushing major to complete his stellar performance.

Down 21-3 with just under nine minutes left in the second quarter, Adams called his own number and scrambled into the endzone from six yards out to cut into the Blue Bombers' lead. Following a Ciante Evans interception, Adams found Chris Matthews for a 19-yard score to head into the break at 34-17.

Three minutes into the final frame and trailing by 20, Adams connected with Matthews for a 10-yard strike. He then guided the offence on a six-play, 83-yard drive that was capped by DeVier Posey's 29-yard touchdown to climb within six points at 37-31 with 2:23 remaining.

In the game's final moments, Adams orchestrated a 94-yard game-winning drive and found Jake Wieneke - his third TD pass in the fourth, each to a different receiver - to tie the game before a Boris Bede convert sealed the unlikely win.

Adams' breakout season now includes 2,953 yards through the air on a 64.9% completion rate, 332 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns (15 passing, 11 rushing). He was also named a Shaw CFL Top Performer in Weeks 5 and 10.

WR | JAKE WIENEKE | MONTREAL ALOUETTES

Wieneke had a career day in the Alouettes' historic comeback over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The South Dakota State alum's game-highs of eight receptions and 134 receiving yards were also new personal bests. Weineke also tallied a trio of second down conversion receptions in the game.

With 11 seconds remaining, Adams connected with the native of Maple Grove, Minn., in the back of the endzone for the 15-yard score which knotted the game at 37-a-piece.

In his rookie season in the CFL, Wieneke has recorded 27 receptions for 376 yards and five touchdowns.

RB | ANDREW HARRIS | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

Andrew Harris accumulated 188 yards from scrimmage in Winnipeg's matchup against the Alouettes.

Harris ran the ball 12 times for 76 yards (6.3 yards per carry) and racked up five receptions for 112 yards. The performance marked his fifth career game with 100+ receiving yards and his second as a Blue Bomber.

The highlight of the Winnipeg native's afternoon came in the second quarter off of a trick play. Darvin Adams connected with Harris for a 74-yard reception which led to a Chris Streveler rushing major.

Harris continues to lead the league with 984 rushing yards, while also tallying 449 receiving yards. This is his third weekly honour after having previously been recognized in Weeks 1 and 5.
