Norfolk SharX News Release
Norfolk, Virginia - The Norfolk SharX were swimming in rough waters with MISL royalty this afternoon at Norfolk Scope Arena and managed an unfathomable 14-13 win over the legendary Milwaukee Wave. The SharX were coming off a thrilling come-from-behind 21-17 win over Syracuse Tuesday night and Norfolk came from behind to win again on Sunday.
Milwaukee (16-5), the number one team in MISL and the defending League champion, went up early with a 3-point goal by Tom Oatley in the seventh minute. Six minutes later, a handball in the box was called against the Wave's Fabio Ribeiro and Matt Clare's ensuing penalty kick made it 3-2. The SharX took the lead 4-3 with a little over two minutes remaining in the quarter when Matthew Delica2te's shot bounced off the end board to Brandon Massie to cleanly shot it past Milwaukee keeper Nick Vorberg. Norfolk outshot the Wave 7-4 in the first fifteen minutes.
Milwaukee took the lead again in the eighth minute of the second period when Jonathan Greenfield got away from the SharX and ended up one-on-one with Norfolk keeper Jamie Lieberman and the first half ended 5-4 in favor of the Wave but Norfolk was still up on shots 10-6.
The teams traded goals for the first eight minutes of the third quarter beginning with Norfolk's Matt Clare (assist by Miguel Ferrer) in the second minute to take the SharX up 6-5 but Milwaukee reclaimed the lead 7-6 just seconds later on a quick restart goal by Greg Howes. Dos Santos scored for the SharX with an assist by Clare to put Norfolk back on top 8-7 but Milwaukee's Marcio Leite took the Wave up by one on another restart a minute and a half later. The Wave took the lead 11-8 with under two minutes left in the quarter on a strike by Hewerton Moreira assisted by Howes.
The SharX and Wave played end to end in for the first half of the fourth quarter before Norfolk's Cecil Lewis who got loose on a breakaway. Matt Clare sent the ball out of the SharX defensive third and Lewis collected it just past midfield, dribbled in and took the SharX to within one at 11-10. Milwaukee's Ian Bennett with an assist from Nicholas Perera took the Wave back up by three (13-10) with five and a half minutes left but that's when the game turned. Norfolk's Marcos Schimidt scored two for the home side with an assist from Ferrer and Dos Santos with three and a half to play to bring the SharX within one at 13-12 and Gerson Dos Santos put the game away with 59 seconds left with a great assist from Delic=A2te. SharX leading scorer Clare had six points on the night followed by Dos Santos' five. Norfolk outshot Milwaukee 20-17 on the night.
"Everyone on the team defended tonight," said head coach Jon Hall. "We had a simple plan and we stuck to it. Everyone has to defend. We're not a team of superstars. We depend on everyone to do their job." Hall continued, "I think this is a win of historic proportions for our franchise. I have the utmost respect for coach Tozer and their whole organization. For our young team this was an incredible afternoon."
The SharX will play their remaining two regular season games at home - hosting Baltimore on February 26 and Wichita on March 4. Kickoff at Norfolk Scope arena for both games is 2 p.m.
