Honolulu Sharks News Release
Honolulu received a strong effort from its pitching staff and pulled away for a 6-2 victory over North Shore in the final game of a three-game series this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park.
Atlanta Braves prospect Johnny Venters (1-0) started for the Sharks and the left-handed hurler picked up the win after allowing three hits through 3 2/3 innings, including a solo home run to Honu second baseman Kurt Mertins.
Teammate Josh Stinson of the New York Mets earned the save, finishing the final 3 1/3 innings through which he gave up a run and struck out a batter.
Honolulu (3-1-1) received a game-high three hits from center fielder Michael Mitchell, including two doubles. Teammate Greg Veloz chipped in two hits and drove in two while improving his batting average to a healthy .412.
North Shore (1-3-1) received two of its four hits on the afternoon from Mertins. Starting pitcher Yasutaka Hittori took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits through four innings.
The game was shortened to seven innings after a mutual decision by both coaches prior to the game intended to allow the pitching staffs a chance to recuperate. The two squads played 10 innings on Tuesday before the Honu prevailed with the 11-10 victory. Wednesday's seven-inning contest ended in a 6-6 tie after the Honu came back to even the score despite not managing their first hit until the final frame.
North Shore will play host to the Waikiki BeachBoys for a three-game series starting at 7 p.m. tomorrow night at Hans L'Orange Park.
Honolulu will host the West Oahu CaneFires for the first of a three-game set for 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Les Murakami Stadium.
