Honolulu Sharks News Release

The Honolulu Sharks live to play another day thanks to a 8-7 win over the Waikiki BeachBoys this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park. The Honolulu victory moves the Sharks (17-19-2) to within a half game of the BeachBoys (18-19-1) in the race for Hawaii Winter Baseball's East Division championship.

In tomorrow's season finale between the division rivals, Honolulu must win in order to clinch the pennant, and secure the automatic berth in Monday's championship game with West Division champ, North Shore. A Waikiki win or tie, however, would guarantee the BeachBoys a spot in the title game.

Honolulu jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame thanks in part to Austin Jackson's RBI triple, and a Kyler Burke run-scoring single. After the BeachBoys battled back to notch the score at 4-4, the Sharks brought home four runs in the home half of the seventh inning on a RBI single from Jackson followed by an Argenis Diaz two-run triple, and a Tyler Flowers double which plated Diaz.

Waikiki brought home three in the ninth to make things interesting, but with runners on second and third with two out, Honolulu hurler Katsuyuki Aihara got Michael McKenry to strike out swinging. Jermaine Mitchell, Cole Garner and Jeff Kindel each notched two of Waikiki's seven hits on the afternoon.

Honolulu reliever Ryan Ouellette improved to 1-1 on the campaign after tossing one inning and striking out one. Aihara picked up his first save of the season as well.

BeachBoys reliever Brant Rustich (3-1, 5.82 ERA) took the loss after surrendering three earned runs on three hits.

Both squads return to Hans L'Orange Park tomorrow at noon for the regular season finale.

First pitch for Monday's championship game is slated for 6 p.m., also at Hans L'Orange Park. The title game will be televised live on K5 The Home Team (KFVE), as well as broadcast live on ESPN 1420 AM (KKEA).
