The Honolulu Sharks pounded 12 hits and used a six-run fourth inning to contain the visiting Waikiki BeachBoys, 10-3, in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game tonight at Hans L'Orange Park before 960 in attendance. The game featured University of Hawaii Warrior football coach June Jones and Hawaii golf legend David Ishii throwing out the honorary first pitches before the contest.
Argenis Diaz collected three hits and drove in a run for the Sharks (6-5-1) while teammate Brandon Snyder cranked a two-run home run and drove in three runs on the evening as the third baseman raised his batting average to .478. Catcher Matt Wieters, who has drawn significant attention as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2007 amateur draft, drove in two runs and boosted his batting average to an even .300.
Honolulu starter Takuya Furuya (3-0, 1.93) earned the win after not surrendering a run and striking out seven compared to just two hits allowed in five innings.
Dan Murphy led Waikiki (7-5) with two hits and three RBIs while teammate Emmanuel Garcia also picked up two base knocks.
Both teams will meet tomorrow night for the series finale with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
