Connecticut Whale News Release
The Connecticut Whale earned its first win of the season in dramatic fashion. After a tight battle with the Metropolitan Riveters, the Whale took the victory on Shannon Doyle's goal from the point with 1:19 left for a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon at RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House.
Whale goaltender Meeri Räisänen was once again a showstopper, making 27 saves, including a number of highlight-reel stops to keep her team in the game.
The Riveters got on the board first, with rookie Audra Richards netting her third goal in four games with a blast from the right wing 13:57 into the first period. But the Whale evened the score before the end of the frame, with Katerina Mrázová scoring her second of the season, putting away a pass in front from Michelle Löwenhielm with just 51 seconds remaining in the first.
The Riveters had a number of chances to pull ahead, including six power plays on the day. Kristin Lewicki had a breakaway chance stopped by Raisanen and hit a post on another opportunity. Richards led the team with four shots on goal, including a rocket that Raisanen got a pad on in the third period.
Mrázová also had a number of good looks for the Whale, recording a game-high five shots on goal, including one that rang off the crossbar.
After Doyle's first goal of the season gave the Whale the lead, the Riveters pulled Katie Fitzgerald, looking for the equalizer, but came up short.
The Riveters will have a shot at revenge next weekend when Connecticut returns to Barnabas for a 2 p.m. tilt on Sunday, November 25. Tickets are still available at NWHL.zone/tickets.
