Shannon Doyle "Proud and Honored to Represent the Whale for a Fifth Season"

Shannon Doyle, an outstanding defender and highly respected leader from Ontario and an original NWHL player, is returning to the Connecticut Whale in 2019-20.

"I'm proud and honored to represent the Connecticut Whale for a fifth season," said Doyle. "Connecticut is home to numerous female youth hockey programs, and I am very excited to work with them this season and to continue being a role model in such a hockey-loving state."

One of the league's steadiest defenders, Doyle is a founding member of the Whale and served as an assistant captain this past season. In four seasons in Connecticut, Doyle has six goals and 22 assists in 68 games. She posted a career-high three goals in the 2018-19 campaign, including the game-winner against the Metropolitan Riveters on Nov. 18, and was selected for NWHL All-Star Weekend in Nashville.

"We are very excited to have Shannon Doyle back for a fifth season with the Connecticut Whale," said Connecticut general manager Bray Ketchum. "She is a leader on this team and one of our top defenders. Her passion for the game is always evident and I know she is going to continue to be a role model on and off the ice."

Prior to joining the Whale, Doyle had an outstanding collegiate career, spending two seasons at Colgate before transferring to Boston University. As a junior, she helped the Terriers to an NCAA championship game appearance and earned Hockey East First Team All-Star and New England Division I All-Star honors, while leading Hockey East in blocked shots. In her final season, she led the team with a plus-33 rating and was tied for third nationally for points among defenders. She finished her college career with 79 points (14-65-79).

Before college, she helped lead Canada to a gold medal at the IIHF U18 World Championships in 2010. She also played for the Toronto Jr. Aeros, captaining the team for a season, and posting 97 points (18-69-97) in 208 games.

"We have the opportunity to be a part of the one united league that can showcase talented hockey players for a 24-game season," said Doyle. "I look forward to making even more positive strides in Season 5 of the NWHL and keeping the positive momentum going."

Doyle is an English teacher at the Trinity-Pawling School in Dutchess County, NY.
