Rising star guard Shakwon Barrett of the KW Titans has been named NBL Canada Rookie of the Year, the first Canadian player ever awarded the honour, league officials announced today.

"This young man has such a unique skillset," said Neal Foreman, Titans head coach and Director Player Personnel. "To be able to hold his own so quickly, not only within our team, but throughout the league has been remarkable."

In 2022, the Toronto native averaged 4.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. He played in 21 games, starting 14. His top two scoring performances of the season came against the league's second-best team, as he dropped 11 points against Sudbury in KW on April 21 and 10 points on them again May 15 in the Nickel City.

Foreman continued, "He's just starting to figure out how to be a pro and what it takes to have a sustainable career. I look forward to watching how his journey continues."

The 6-foot-4-inch guard played collegiately with Northwest Florida State College, Tennessee State, and Tulane.

"What impresses me about this young man is that even as a rookie he played with such poise and intensity, especially on the defensive end" said Audley Stephenson, NBLC VP of Basketball Operations. "You cannot deny his energy his effort, or his hustle, and as he grows and develops as a player, I am so excited what he can do as a young Canadian player in the league."

Barrett is the first member of the KW Titans to win the award. Previous winners of the NBL Canada Rookie of the Year Award include:

2011-12 | Brandon Robinson, Oshawa Power
