Severance Named Southern Sports Supply ECHL Equipment Manager of the Year
June 24, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
PRINCETON, N.J. â The ECHL announced on Tuesday that Tom Severance of the Charlotte Checkers has been named the 2002-03 Southern Sports Supply ECHL Equipment Manager of the Year.
Severance received the award, which was chosen in a vote of ECHL equipment managers, at the 2003 Society of Professional Equipment Managers Meetings held last week in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
"I would like to thank my peers in the ECHL for this wonderful honor," said Severance. "The way we all help each other during the season certainly makes our jobs much easier. I also want to thank the Checkers players, coaches and trainer for providing me with a great environment to work. There isn't an award of this type in the National Hockey League or the American Hockey League, so that makes it very special to me."
"The job of an equipment manager many times is thankless and goes unnoticed, so it's great to see Tom get some well-deserved recognition," said Charlotte Head Coach and General Manager Don MacAdam. "I've always felt that we've had one of the best trainer/equipment manager staffs in the ECHL and obviously Tom's award shows that others in the ECHL feel the same way."
The 33-year-old Severance was hired as the Checkers equipment manager in December of 2001. A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Severance has worked in the NHL with New Jersey and the New York Islanders and in the ECHL with New Orleans. He also worked in minor league baseball with New Orleans.
