Former Louisiana Coach Doug Shedden Named Head Coach of St. John s In AHL

PRINCETON, N.J. - Doug Shedden, who coached in the ECHL with the Louisiana IceGators from 1995-1999, was named head coach of the St. John's Maple Leafs of the American Hockey League on Tuesday.

Shedden was head coach of Memphis in the Central Hockey League, going 128-56-14 in the regular season while leading the RiverKings to the postseason in each of his three seasons, including back-to-back CHL Championships in 2002 and 2003. Shedden coached Flint of the United Hockey League in 1999-2000, tying the league record for points (111) and fewest losses (14) en route to winning the UHL Championship.

Shedden helped Louisiana reach the ECHL Playoffs in each of its first four seasons, including the 1997 Kelly Cup Finals and the 1998 Southern Conference Finals. Prior to joining Louisiana, Shedden coached Wichita of the CHL for three seasons from 1992-95, winning back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995.

Selected in the fifth round (93rd overall) by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1980 National Hockey League Entry Draft, Shedden played eight seasons in the NHL with Pittsburgh, Detroit, Quebec and Toronto scoring 325 points (139g-186a) in 416 games.

The ECHL had affiliation agreements with 22 of the 28 teams in the AHL in 2002-03 and there were more than 80 players in the ECHL on AHL contracts in 2002-03 and the ECHL had 450 call ups to the AHL in 2002-03. The ECHL had 400 call ups to the 27 teams of the AHL in 2001-02, the most since a record 453 call ups to the 19 teams of the AHL and the 13 teams of the International Hockey League in 1999-2000.
