East Kentucky Miners News Release
PIKEVILLE, KY. - Young basketball players ages 5-13 participated in Coach Keathley's Pro Basketball Youth Camp held June 5-7 at Prestonsburg High School. The camp, under the direction of East Kentucky Miners head coach Kevin Keathley, stressed basketball fundamentals. Among the things taught were techniques used during Miners practices. Campers who excelled throughout the camp were rewarded with various basketball-related merchandise.
"To have 70 children turn out for our first camp is tremendous," said Keathley. "My main objective was to provide a camp that the students could benefit from. I believe we achieved that. The most important aspect of the camp was teaching the campers about setting goals and working hard to reach their dreams."
Miners guard Jason McLeish, front office member Brian Levy and local youth coach Jamie Howell joined Keathley on the camp staff.
Keathley and McLeish spoke to campers about the importance of setting goals. The importance of hard work was also stressed during the camp. "We had a first class staff - and to have a professional basketball player like Jason McLeish to serve as one of the camp staff members provided an opportunity for the children in attendance to learn from an athlete that they rarely get to see up close and personal in this area."
The Prestonsburg stop was the first of four for Coach Keathley's Pro Basketball Youth Camp.
"I'm looking forward to our upcoming camp in Knott County," said Keathley.
"We're going to work extremely hard to make it the very best camp in the region this year. "Hopefully, we will have the same kind of reception at the Sportsplex that we did at Prestonsburg High School."
Even in the offseason, fans continue to follow the East Kentucky Miners professional basketball organization. Basketball camp participants and their parents eagerly fired questions concerning the East Kentucky Miners to Keathley and McLeish.
"To have 70 kids turn out in Prestonsburg says a lot about the reach of the East Kentucky Miners and the work we did in putting together the Pro Basketball Youth Camp," Keathley confided. "To have that kind of support almost 30 miles outside of our playing area is a credit to this community."
East Kentucky Tire, Ronnie M. Slone Attorney at Law, Home Furniture and Wal-Mart sponsored the pro basketball youth camp.
"Without our sponsors, none of this would have been possible," Keathley said. "Myself and the entire staff of the Coach Kevin Keathley Pro Basketball Youth Camp would like to send a thank you to the sponsors and the City of Prestonsburg for making this a very successful event for the youth of this community."
Knott County Sportsplex will host Coach Keathley's Pro Basketball Youth Camp June 16-18.
Central Elementary was originally scheduled to host the camp June 11-13. However, due to a scheduling conflict, Central Elementary will welcome the camp July 21-23.
Sheldon Clark High School will be the site of Coach Keathley's Pro Basketball Youth Camp July 31-Aug. 2.
Each of Coach Keathley Pro Basketball Youth Camp runs three days.
