Aiken Foxhounds News Release
CONYERS, GA - The South Coast League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Aiken Foxhounds catcher Ray Serrano has been signed by the Atlanta Braves.
Serrano, 26, was signed by Braves' National Crosschecker Kurt Kemp recently and reported to minor league spring training in Orlando, FL.
"Ray brings a lot of knowledge and talent to the catching position and the Braves are going to benefit from having him in their organization this year," said Foxhounds Manager Chris Bando.
Serrano, who hails from Ponce, Puerto Rico, attended Georgia Military Community College before signing with the Atlanta Braves as a free agent in 1999. Serrano made stops in Danville, Jamestown, Macon, Myrtle Beach, and Greenville before being released by the Braves in 2003.
Later that year, Serrano signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays before rejoining the Braves organization in 2004. Last season with the Mississippi Braves, Serrano showed his versatility by catching, playing DH, and even pitching a few innings.
Serrano was granted free agency by the Braves after the 2006 season, but not before making an impact on Atlanta's minor league outfield coordinator Jim Beauchamp, father of Kash Beauchamp (SCL VP/Director of Scouting).
"I had heard from Jim and Kash that he was available, so I went ahead and offered him a contract for this season," said Foxhounds manager Chris Bando.
Shortly thereafter, Serrano was contacted by the Braves to re-sign with them for a third time and join the club for spring training. Although his stay was short lived, he was thankful for the chance to continue his career in Aiken.
"I was looking forward to the opportunity to play everyday for Aiken this year," shared Serrano. "The front office and managerial staff made me feel welcome and I'm thankful for the chance they gave me."
Serrano becomes the fourth player signed to an affiliated contract in the short history of the South Coast League.
The South Coast League is a six-team based independent professional baseball league located in the Southeastern U.S. whose philosophy is centered on player development and growth. The SCL's goal is to be a resource for Major League Baseball and a stepping stone for players eager to get back into the affiliated ranks.
