Second half surge lifts SkyRockets over Miners

PIKEVILLE, KY. - Ronnie Fields scored a game-high 31 points Saturday night as Minot defeated East Kentucky 113-108 at the Expo Center in the first of back-to-back games between American Conference rivals.

Ray Cunningham turned in a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds for the American Conference-leading SkyRockets. Marshall Phillips scored 18 points and Kevin Rice netted 14 for the visiting Minot team.

Minot won the quarter points, prevailing 5-2. The SkyRockets improved to 27-8 after posting the conference win.

The two teams were tied at the end of each of the first two quarters. East Kentucky and Minot were in a 27-27 deadlock at the conclusion of the first quarter. The Miners were in a 55-55 tie when the intermission period arrived.

Josh Pace recorded a triple-double of 16 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds for the Miners. The triple-double was the third rare basketball feat of its kind of the season for the former Syracuse University standout. Boo Jackson helped to lead East Kentucky with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Mike Dean scored 23 points and Jason McLeish added 15 for the Miners. Lawrence Barnes and Steve Thomas scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, in East Kentucky's home setback. Thomas also pulled down six rebounds as he made his debut in a Miners uniform.

Minot put some considerable distance between itself and East Kentucky in the third quarter, outscoring the Miners 33-20.

East Kentucky put forth a strong fourth quarter effort before falling short. The host team won the fourth quarter 33-25.

The Miners fell to 18-18 after suffering the loss.

East Kentucky will host Minot in the second and final game of the American Conference series Sunday. Tip-off for the latest East Kentucky-Minot game is set for 4:05 p.m.
